Nordic Box Office Trends – Local Films Gain Momentum

In recent seasons, locally produced features across the Nordic countries have become a major force at the box office, sometimes accounting for roughly a quarter to a third of annual ticket sales — a trend that has drawn the attention of the international studios.

Major distributors have begun snapping up Nordic titles: Egmont/Columbia Tristar handled Norway’s top local performer “The Biggest Thing,” while its Finnish affiliate released Kaija Juurikkala’s “Riding with Moses.” UIP is scheduled to release Aki Kaurismäki’s latest, “The Man Without a Past,” in March, and Finnish film officials note that virtually every big distributor now scouts Finnish productions for their slates.

Independent and regional players are also repositioning. Norway’s newcomer Oro Film, led by Age Hoffart, sees homegrown hits such as “Cool & Crazy” as attractive because they draw audiences and cost less than major international blockbusters — although that popularity increases competition among indies vying for Norwegian projects. Hoffart’s company opened with the coastal documentary “The Coastal Life” and has acquired the follow-up “Cool & Crazy on the Road.”

On their home turf, companies like Svensk Filmindustri (SF), Sandrew Metronome (SM) and Nordisk Film Biografdistribution (Egmont) operate with the clout of majors, covering Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Those firms also maintain strategic partnerships with Hollywood studios: SF works with Fox, SM with Warner Bros., and Egmont with Columbia Tristar. Such tie-ups helped SF’s release of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring pull in almost 2 million admissions across the Nordic region before the end of 2001, and Sandrew Metronome’s pan-Nordic release of Harry Potter likewise generated heavy audience numbers. But even these established distributors now find themselves competing for local content alongside smaller houses.

Some independents have had a particularly strong run. Sonet, the MTG subsidiary, built a reputation for choosing commercial winners: its 2000 release “Together” topped the local box office that year, and “Jalla! Jalla!” was among the biggest earners in 2001; the company hopes its third title, “Invisible,” will continue the streak. Industry analysts point to Sonet’s knack for selecting crowd-pleasing material as a key to its success.

Angel Scanbox, formed by merging Angel Films and the former Scanbox Entertainment, has grown into one of the region’s largest indies; it now operates across acquisition, production and exhibition. Acquisitions executive Sara Stockman says the company targets a mix of international and European fare, with a solid emphasis on Danish films.

The exhibition landscape is shifting too, particularly in Norway, where municipal authorities are divesting cinema holdings. Oslo plans to sell 66% of its shares in 31 screens, while Stavanger and Sandnes have already sold 49% stakes; Bergen and Trondheim are expected to follow. Local cinema managers warn that the move to private ownership could squeeze independent distributors, since private investors typically demand higher returns than municipalities did.

Scandinavian titles being shopped at AFM include:

Shake It — A debut feature from Danish comedian and TV personality Hella Joof. The comedy, produced by Angel/Scanbox, follows an engaged couple whose wedding plans are derailed when a clandestine affair comes to light. The cast includes Mads Mikkelsen, Troels Lyby and Charlotte Munck. Sales handled by Bavaria Film International.

Deadline — A thriller presented by Svensk Filmindustri about ruthless newsroom politics and a female reporter who uncovers a far more complex terrorist plot than her colleagues anticipate. Directed by Colin Nutley, the film stars Pernilla August, Helena Bergström and Örjan Ramberg. Sales via SF Sales.

Kites Over Helsinki — Peter Lindholm’s drama traces a man’s surreal, memory-driven journey after his brother dies in a car crash, revisiting a troubled relationship marked by love and betrayal. Starring Paavo Kerosuo, Pirkka-Pekka Petelius and Pekka Strang. Produced and represented by BV International Pictures.

One Hell of a Christmas — A dark, action-tinged horror comedy from director Shaky Gonzales that interweaves action in the contemporary world with scenes set in the underworld. The ensemble includes Thure Lindhardt, Tolo Montana and Erik Holmey. Produced by Wise Guy Productions; sales by Trust Sales.
