The rare earth metals market is projected to grow from USD 5.81 billion in 2026 to USD 9.44 billion by 2034, a CAGR of 6.25%. Mining, separation, processing and material production are geographically concentrated in a small number of countries and hubs, and that concentration is pushing governments and manufacturers to rethink sourcing.

Concentration and Trade Risk

China's export controls are a reminder of how regulation can affect the availability and flow of strategic materials. In February 2026, MP Materials selected Northlake, Texas for its 10X magnet manufacturing campus, with planned investment above USD 1.25 billion. In November 2025, India approved a scheme worth USD 763.45 million to promote domestic manufacturing of 6,000 MTPA of sintered rare earth magnets. In March 2026, Toyota Tsusho joined JOGMEC's Lofdal project in Namibia to strengthen Japan's supply chains.

Building Alternatives to Concentrated Supply

Manufacturers and governments are pursuing supply chain diversification through domestic processing, alternative sourcing and strategic stockpiling. In January 2026, Australia announced a USD 1.2 billion Critical Minerals Strategic Reserve, with rare earths among the first minerals targeted. Arafura's Nolans project reached final investment decision in May 2026, and Iluka is building an integrated refinery at Eneabba, Western Australia.

Recovery From Secondary Sources

Rare earth recycling is emerging as a significant opportunity. Neodymium, dysprosium and praseodymium can be recovered from end-of-life magnets, electronics, industrial machinery and manufacturing waste. In December 2025, the U.S. Department of Energy announced funding of up to USD 134 million for commercial-scale recovery and refining projects, and in July 2025 Apple committed USD 500 million to U.S. supply chain development, including a recycling facility built around its partnership with MP Materials. Improvements in hydrometallurgical processing, solvent extraction and direct recycling are gradually narrowing the cost gap with primary production, and recycled material is expected to supplement primary supply and reduce exposure to regionally concentrated mining and processing networks.

Renewable Energy Pull

Wind turbines, particularly offshore ones, depend on wind turbine magnets for efficient energy conversion, with lower maintenance needs and higher reliability. China added more than 430 GW of wind and solar capacity in 2025, up 22% year on year, while U.S. wind generated approximately 464 billion kilowatt-hours, about 10% of utility-scale generation. As wind farms multiply, demand for superior magnetic materials is likely to rise.

Company and Regional Moves

Lynas is the largest rare earth producer outside China, and Neo Performance Materials opened a new magnet manufacturing facility in Narva, Estonia in 2025 to build an independent European supply chain. Ucore is commercializing its RapidSX solvent-extraction separation technology, and Canada's Saskatchewan Research Council facility focuses on magnet-grade NdPr metal and dysprosium and terbium oxides. In Europe, mining projects in Sweden and Greenland are underway to reduce reliance on imports from Asia, and funds are being announced for recycling technologies.
