The general rule is six years from the end of the tax year the records relate to. Most business owners think it's the year they filed the return which is close but not quite right and that small gap has actually burned a few of our clients who did the math slightly off and tossed a box of invoices a full year before they legally could. So if your 2021 fiscal year ended in December that year your records need to stick around until the end of 2027 not 2026.

This applies to everything you'd expect. Invoices bank statements payroll records contracts and any supporting documentation for expenses you claimed. It also applies to things people forget about like mileage logs and home office calculations which sound minor until an auditor asks for them specifically and you're stuck trying to reconstruct a year old commute pattern from memory.

Keep the records. Six years passes faster than people expect anyway.
