Santner Praises Ravindra and Williamson’s Crucial Partnership

New Zealand secured their place in the Champions Trophy final with a commanding 50-run victory over South Africa in the semi-final on Wednesday. Captain Mitchell Santner credited the outstanding 164-run partnership between Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson as the turning point of the match, calling it the "foundation" of New Zealand’s record-breaking total.

“The platform that we were able to set was vital, with Rachin and Kane doing their things,” Santner said in the post-match interview. “That partnership was massive for us and allowed us to start accelerating earlier than usual.”

The second-wicket stand between Ravindra (108) and Williamson (102) propelled the Black Caps to a formidable 362-6, the highest total in Champions Trophy semi-final history. Their innings was filled with class and precision, dismantling South Africa’s bowling attack with elegant stroke play and calculated aggression.

New Zealand’s Batting Dominance

New Zealand’s innings got off to a solid start despite the early loss of Devon Conway for 27. However, Ravindra and Williamson steadied the innings, mixing patience with well-timed attacking strokes to put South Africa under pressure. Their partnership set the perfect stage for the middle order to capitalize.

Daryl Mitchell (49) and Glenn Phillips (49 not out) added the finishing touches with aggressive batting in the final overs, pushing New Zealand past the 350-run mark. The Proteas bowlers, despite early breakthroughs, struggled to contain the Kiwi batters on a pitch that favored stroke play.

Clinical Bowling Restricts South Africa’s Chase

Chasing a daunting target of 363, South Africa started well, reaching 125-1 with Temba Bavuma (56) and Rassie van der Dussen (45) putting together a promising stand. However, New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack ensured that the Proteas never truly gained control of the chase.

David Miller played a lone hand for South Africa, scoring a brilliant 106 not out off 91 balls, but lacked enough support from the other end. Regular wickets at crucial junctures derailed South Africa’s momentum, preventing them from building a match-winning partnership.

“The key for the bowlers was to keep chipping away with wickets,” Santner said. “We always talk about applying pressure but still taking wickets, and it was pleasing to get three important scalps.”

Santner was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-43, using his left-arm spin effectively to break partnerships. New Zealand’s all-round bowling depth proved to be a key factor, with the likes of Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson, and Matt Henry also keeping the Proteas in check.

South Africa’s Missed Opportunities

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma admitted that his team’s failure to build partnerships at crucial moments cost them the match.

“From a batting point of view, we didn’t get those partnerships,” Bavuma said. “We needed either myself or Rassie van der Dussen to emulate what their top four did.”

Despite being well-placed at 125-1, South Africa lost wickets at regular intervals, failing to maintain the momentum required for a successful chase. Bavuma highlighted the importance of building a strong foundation, especially given the firepower in their middle order.

“We know how destructive our middle order can be in the last 20 overs, but we needed a better platform to take advantage of that,” he added.

New Zealand Marches Into the Final

With this comprehensive victory, New Zealand advances to the Champions Trophy final, aiming to secure the title for the first time. Their well-balanced side, featuring a strong batting lineup and a disciplined bowling attack, makes them a formidable contender in the tournament’s grand finale.

For Santner and his team, the focus now shifts to preparing for the final, where they will look to carry their momentum forward and make history.
